One Thing You Can Do To Help… http://coolbubba.com/blog/affiliate-marketing-advertising-tax-one-thing-you-can-do-to-help/218/ http://coolbubba.com/blog/affiliate-marketing-advertising-tax-one-thing-you-can-do-to-help/218/#comments Mon, 05 Jul 2010 22:00:21 +0000 Mike Richey http://coolbubba.com/blog/?p=218 If you are involved in affiliate programs and generate marketing and/or advertising revenue online from your blog, or other type of website, you may soon be in for a very rude, unpleasant surprize.  Especially with the current economic situation, state governments could be looking to increase revenue any way possible, and I”m sure that there will be increased instances of state legislatures trying to pry more and more of your hard earned money from your wallet and from your families.

What exactly is the Advertising Tax?  Well, a very short, basic explanation of it is that some people, governments, state legislatures, etc are trying to use the existance of an affiliate program as basis for the establishment of “Nexus” of a company in that state.  Once Nexus is established and has been determined, states can then use that to force those companies to collect sales tax for that state, at a minimum.  It opens up quite a can of worms, and sales tax could just be the beginning, as they could impose other legislation and control on those companies, and make business prohibitively expensive and an accounting nightmare at minimum.   Instead of dealing with this, retailers will just drop affiliates who reside in the offending states, further eliminating jobs and income when it’s difficult enough as it is.

One thing you can do is to visit this page at the Performance Marketing Alliance and let them know about yourself and how it would affect you.  They can then pass this information on to legislators in your state, and let them know that you don’t approve of it,  and the harm it would cause your business and your families.   http://performancemarketingassociation.com/advocateform.html

Better to take a proactive stance to this instead of just waiting for that e-mail that lets you know you’ve been dropped from the affiliate programs that are putting food on your table.  I’ve been through this once before, in 2006 with the online casino industry, with all of my eggs in one basket with that, and within a months time being dropped from every revenue source I had.  Not a fun spot to be in…

For example, did you know that when you create a wordpress post and then publish it, wordpress automatically “pings” your blog post, notifying quite a few other sites that it’s there, so that it will be visited quickly, and that others will know that it’s there?
 
This can cause it to show up in the search engines rather quickly, or at least be indexed by the, and they can be made aware of your new post and content.
 
Out of the box, WordPress notifies pingomatic, one of the largest pinging sites ( www.pingomatic.com) and this lets MANY people/sites/engines/etc know that you’ve got new content that needs to be reviewed/crawled/indexed, etc.?
 
In order to check who your wordpress installation is notifying, it’s really rather easy to check this.
 
If you log into your wordpress management area, which is typically www.site.com/blog/wp-admin or if you’ve installed wordpress to the root of your site, you can go to:  www.yoursite.com/wp-admin and log in.
 
Once you’ve managed to log in, on the left side of the page, there is a section that says “Settings.”   Click on this, and then below that, a section that says “Writing.”
 
Scroll down to the bottom of the section that says “Writing” and find where it says “Update Services.”  Directly under Update Services it should say something like this:
When you publish a new post, WordPress automatically notifies the following site update services. For more about this, see Update Services on the Codex. Separate multiple service URLs with line breaks.
 
Well, in that section, I just saw the url for pingomatic, by default.  Well, if you’d like to kick up your traffic and exposure exponentially, you can enter in MANY diffferent sites here.  At the very bottom of this is a list which you can simply copy and paste into there, and then click Save Changes.  Then, when you create a new post, it will not only notify Pingomatic, it will notify the entire list below, and you will have quite a few other spiders coming to crawl and take a look at your post, and you can have it indexed and viewed by a considerable number of people.
